Pasqual C. "Pat" Joy
1918 - 2016

Pasqual (Pat) Carl Joy was born on December 24th 1918 in Pocatello, Idaho. In 1923, Pat’s father, Carl, moved the family to Denver to continue his work with Union Pacific Railroad. As a young boy, Pat began working on the truck farms in North Denver to help earn money for his family while attending school at Horace Mann.

In 1936, at the age of 17 he met Ann Marie Oetter through mutual friends, and they soon began dating. Her family was weary of his Italian heritage, but he soon won them over with his charm and charisma. At the age of 22, the couple married on March 31st, 1940 in Denver, Colorado. Soon after they were married, Pat enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During WWII Pat was stationed in the Pacific on Ulithi Island where he was in charge of the beer distribution for the sailors and repaired their shoes.

After the war, Pat returned to Denver where he and Ann began their family with the birth of their first son, Pat Joy Jr. Two years later, Mike Joy was born and the family moved to the newly built Harvey Park neighborhood. In the same neighborhood, Pat opened, Pat’s Shoe Service in the Brentwood Shopping Center off Federal and Jewell. The shoe shop flourished becoming extremely successful and popular within the Denver Metro area.

In the mid 1950s Ann’s brother, Gordon, introduced the family to a weekend vacation spot near Lake Granby. They purchased their first mobile home in Roadside Park in 1957. In 1962, Pat and Ann had the opportunity to purchase the property with another couple. Family and friends consistently joined them fishing and enjoying each other’s company. In 1968, Pat and Ann bought out their partners, for full ownership. Soon Pat found himself digging gas, electrical, and water lines on the property, creating the park as we know it today. At Roadside, Pat and Ann started a community of family and friends who enjoy campfires, golf, bocce, and of course the occasional beer or spirit. Pat spent many afternoons sitting on his porch with a cold beer, talking with neighbors, friends and family with big band music playing in the background.

In addition to having fun at Roadside, Pat and Ann enjoyed attending Broncos games. In the 1960s they bought season tickets in the South Stands. They soon spent every home game with family and friends at Mile High Stadium. They combined their Bronco pride and love of travel to attend many away games, even stepping into Raider territory. They had to be escorted by cops in Oakland to ensure their safety in order to see their beloved team play. Pat was a diehard Broncos fan, traveling to various Super Bowls throughout the years.

Pat looked forward to retirement and sold his shoe shop to spend more time doing the things he loved. He and Ann joined a travel club, Ports-of-Call, where they traveled the world going to every continent but Antarctica. In addition to travel, Pat filled his days playing golf at Roadside, attending Broncos games and spending time with family. In the 1980s, Pat and Ann welcomed two granddaughters, Barb and Gail, into the family. Pat and Ann enjoyed spending time with them. He taught them how to play golf and cribbage, his favorite Roadside hobbies.

Pat is survived by is wife of 76 years, Ann Marie Joy (99), sister Carla Joy, sons Pat Joy Jr. (Patricia Joy, Deceased) and Mike Joy, granddaughters Barb Aswege (Nate Aswege) and Gail Martin (Brad Martin), great-granddaughter Peyton Aswege.
