1946 - 2016

Elena Katherine Williams, 70, of Aurora, passed away October 21, 2016.

She was born January 8, 1946 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Joe and Edith (Quintana) Mascarenas. She was a graduate of Adams City High School. On October 28, 1972 she married Jim Williams, of Denver, Colorado.

Elena is survived by her husband Jim Williams; three children, Kellyanne (Kevin Bolton) Mascarenas, Alison (Andrew Helm) Williams Helm, and Lance (Brooke) Williams; five grandchildren, Andrea (Brendan) Newman, Eliot Helm, Tatym Williams, Jude Williams, and Zinnia Helm; two brothers, Richard (Marcella) Mascarenas and Scott Mascarenas; two sisters, Patricia (Paul) Ellis and Cynthia (Tom) Rochford. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Edith Mascarenas.

Elena's sense of humor was infectious as she loved slapstick comedy, pushing the envelope and making dares. She liked to act silly and say bawdy things to crack her son Lance up. She talked her sister Cynthia into getting a tattoo together, but after Cindy got her tattoo Elena backed out. She was a born leader who loved to organize things from her Ladies Night Out with her dear friends from King Sooper's, to making mints for her granddaughter Andee's wedding, and to cooking her famous green chili and smothered burritos for a whole house full of people. In addition she was crafty, she loved to make her own Halloween decorations and dye and decorate Easter eggs with her children and subsequently her grandchildren. She was always pitching in at church when her kids were young to hand-make name tags for special events with her perfectly neat penmanship. In recent year's she was self-elected co-captain of the Holiday Bake Sale at the Cherry Creek Nursing Home when she was once asked to contribute a couple dozen cookies and some other baked goods and showed up with more than half the total sale that she had cajoled, bartered and coerced her friends and daughters (daughter-in-law) to contribute.

Elena added new meaning to voracious reading. She was always up for trading books with her eldest daughter Kellyanne and her friends Char and Sally. She was notorious for hitting Senior Day at the Second Hand Store (the Segundo) to pour over and purchase paperbacks. There were not many rules at her house for her beloved grandchildren except she once made Eliot cry because he carelessly ripped a book, he never did that again. She loved reading, recently Jodi Piccoult and books about Anne Boleyn. She was an early adherent to Oprah's Book Club and while the show aired was an avid viewer. Elena loved a bargain and enjoyed the cat and mouse of striking a deal. She outfitted both of Alison's children with all the latest garage sale goodies of name brand highchairs, baby bouncers and Radio Flyer wagon that she found in her good garage sale neighborhoods. She also loved to go with her husband Jim "up to the Hills" (code for gambling in Black Hawk) just for the afternoon when the whim struck, or sometimes an overnight at the Ameristar. She was lucky at winning the slots and often surprised her kids by sharing her winnings; and would occasionally tell Jim she had won too. Likewise she had an uncanny knack for driving into a parking lot and finding a choice spot.

Elena was incredibly generous, even to strangers: translating for Spanish-speaking customers at Kings Sooper's when more fluent speakers could not be found. She was always good for a loan/gift, or to buy a meal at a restaurant. She drove her children crazy when they were young by offering rides to other kids in the neighborhood that her kids hardly knew or did not know at all. Elena was extremely loyal as a friend, and she was devoted to the care and protection of her father Joe until he died in 2015. She adored a good chocolate dipped cone, marshmallow pinwheels, and lemons with salt were always a favorite. She believed in an afternoon siesta--with the kitchen egg timer going so she didn't oversleep when it was time to pick up the kids.

When Elena was younger she enjoyed Frankie Avalon and bike rides, later it was Barbara Streisand and the aerobic senior water class. She collected roosters, and she once said her favorite color was black. Her favorite movie was Doctor Zhivago. She played a mean game of bingo, and lately it was slots on her IPad that she delighted in. She wore a little gold umbrella on a chain for many years, and her Christmas Village was a sight to behold during the holidays. She was proud of her China Hutch with the Depression era glass and gold holiday flatware it contained. Elena could plan a grocery trip for a family of 5 once a month and liked clipping coupons. She was an avid recycler before people recycled, encouraging her kids to go out to the garage and "crush the cans" for extra money. She enjoyed journaling much of her life. She taught her children how to cook, clean and the value of family. She bought too many shoes for her tiny little feet. She was dedicated to family and felt she was blessed with a good one. Elena was a native Coloradan and did not like to venture far from home, but always lived life to the fullest!

Memorial contributions may be made to The Denver Hospice, 501 S. Cherry Street, Suite 700, Denver, CO 80246.
