Michael Ross McDowell of Sidney, Nebraska passed away peacefully at St Luke’s Presbyterian Medical Center on 01/09/2017 at the age of 79.
Mike was born in Medicine Lodge, Kansas in 1937. He graduated from Hugoton High School in 1955. Mike then joined the United States Army in 1955 serving his country for 5 years. One of his duties included guarding the Berlin wall in Germany and was also a member of the Army band playing trumpet. Mike married Gail Self in Craig, Colorado, her home town, on 06/20/1965 and enjoyed over 50 years of loving companionship together.
Mike earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Western State College, Gunnison, Colorado in 1964 and went on to earn his Master’s degree in Music Education from Western State College in 1972. Mike worked as a Music Educator in Lyman, Nebraska for 3 years then Sidney, Nebraska for 29 years retiring in 1996. Mike was a dedicated teacher influencing the lives of many students. In his retirement from education he worked at Cabela’s for 10 years.
Cremation has already taken place. Mike is survived by his loving wife Gail McDowell; son Matt McDowell, wife Lorri and grandchildren Mackenzie and Laiken of Denver Colorado; son Brian McDowell, wife Tina and grandchildren Rashel, Sydney, Molly, and 2 great grandchildren of Omaha, Nebraska. Michael is preceded in death by his father M.J. (Mack) McDowell and mother Nona Mae McDowell of Hugoton Kansas.
