Peggy May Appler Himes

February 27, 1924 - May 22, 2014

Peggy May Appler was born in Hanover, Pennsylvania to Albert Ross and Lottie Mae (Bucher) Appler. She was the youngest of four following her brother Clefton Ross, and sisters Mary Elizabeth (Moon), Ruth Anna (Bressi).

During World War II, Peggy worked in the layout division of York Safe and Lock which had been converted to an artillery manufacturing before joining the Cadet Nurses Corps. Upon completing her nurses training through Church Home and Hospital, Peggy intended to fulfill her military commitment but the war was concluding and new recruits were no longer needed. She then chose to serve veterans by moving to Pittsburgh, PA and working at the Veteran’s Hospital. This is where she met her husband, Billy Allen Himes. They tied the knot in 1949 and were married until Bill’s death in 2014.

Peggy work as a nurse for over 50 years and finally retired at age 73. She loved nursing and helping others throughout her career and her retirement. She worked at the Veteran’s Hospital, the steel mills, the local clinics and local real estate agencies. She served on numerous boards, including the Indiana State Board of Industrial Nurses, an animal welfare group in Douglas County, Saint Philips’ Guild, and the Sedalia History Museum. She was quick to help her friends in need or to volunteer at blood-drives and wellness checkpoints, and the VA. She had a soft spot for animals of all kinds and adopted many mix-breed mutts throughout the years.

Peggy was a pro at whipping up a pie or delicious dessert for a bridge party, a neighbor, visiting family, or just for her and Billy to enjoy. She greatly enjoyed her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Himes, her parents and her siblings. She is survived by her children, Dirk (Mary) Himes of Charleston SC, Ross (Marcia) Himes of Chesterton, IN, Craig Himes of Hillsboro, OH, Laura (Paul) Iversen of Mount Vernon, IA, and Margaret “Maggie” (Scott) Gomer of Denver, CO, and fourteen grandchildren -Drew Himes. Paige Himes (Winnell), Alex Himes, Peter Iversen, Emily Iversen, Doug Himes, Elizabeth Iversen, Haylea “Chelsea” Himes, Corey Himes, Matthew Gomer, Gretchen Gomer, Evan Himes, Dylan Gomer, and Jennifer Gomer. Two great-grandchildren have been born since her death: Zoey and Lucy Hacker.

Peggy donated her body to the Colorado Anatomical Board for use in the university system. Her hope was that someone who studied her body would learn something that someday could help others. Her ashes will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
