Faith, hope, and love folks. Faith, hope, and love. Mom did not put too much credence in hope. She figured if she pounded you enough with faith and love then there would be no need to hope for anything else. She was a Nebraskan of German descent so her love was demonstrated by worry and food …and often the two together. She would worry that there was not enough food and she would start making sandwiches before the table was even cleared.

And you would have faith. And you would demonstrate that faith by going to 6:30 mass. You weren't going to make God wait while you had a doughnut or slept one off….. and Saturday evening mass? Might as well be a Lutheran! No, the doors open at 6:30 a.m. and you will be there. And if Father Sanger, Bohte, Flaherty or Gable walk out by themselves well, then, you would demonstrate your faith further by going and serving. You could either wait for the hiss or go on your own volition.

And there was love. Growing up you never heard the phrase "Just wait until your father comes home" in our house. Mom’s justice was delivered swiftly and with whichever hand was not holding something and at times with that hand as well.

But when Father did come home you could expect the lecture. The lecture was "Your Mother is your best friend in the world and every time you do something stupid it is like you are taking a knife and stabbing your Mother in the heart. But no matter how many stupid things you do, no matter how many stabs are delivered she will still love you. Unconditionally. Boundlessly."

Father Marcos delivered an Easter homily here (I believe the last time we were all here together) about love. He mentioned that yes, the love demonstrated for us by Jesus and his sacrifice was tremendous, but that was easy. No, the love we need to demonstrate is to love Judas and Peter for the mistakes they made. We need to love the Pharisees and the Centurions and even after we have loved all of them we must still have enough love leftover to console the Virgin Mother in her loss.

That's a Mother's love. That was Mom’s love. So before you leave here today be sure to hug every mother, every woman and share that love. And after you have shared that love through hugs be sure you have one more hug to share with another person in this room who exemplifies that love…. Papa Joe. We love you Papa Joe.
