Cornell Burton was one of 15 children born to the late Clarence and Eula Burton. He was born and raised in Baytown, Texas. At the age of 17, he enlisted and completed one tour of duty with the United States Army. After returning home to Texas, he married Ella Mae Lewis. Shortly after marriage, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.

Cornell and Ella had four children: Darren Phil (deceased), Damaris Lynn, Dale Kenyetta, and Dawn Teal. He and his family made their home in the beautiful rocky mountain state of Colorado.
