John L. Vieyra
1930 - 2014

John L. Vieyra, 84, of Erie, CO—formerly of North Platte—passed peacefully on December 21, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.

John was born on December 27, 1930, in Wellington, KS to Ygnacio and Patricia (Landeros) Vieyra. His family eventually moved to Sutherland, Ne. On August 16, 1950, John married the love of his life Carmen (Reyes) in a beautiful wedding ceremony filled with family and friends. John and Carmen made their home in North Platte.

He started working as a cook for the Pawnee Hotel at the age of 17. Later, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad starting at age 19, and he worked there until his retirement. He made his debut in a UPRR TV commercial, and later helped build Engine #480 at Memorial Park in North Platte.

John was a devoted, hard-working, generous family man. He worked all his life to raise his children with his wife of 64 years. His love for life will always be remembered through his love for Mexican music, watching his favorite team the Huskers, and spending time with his family. He was also one of the founders of the Mexican Athletic Club (M.A.C.) which was an opportunity for young athletes to play softball, basketball, and bowling. Later he sponsored the softball team “Los Machos.” He was a man of many talents; he could fix any broken object, and he enjoyed helping his family/friends/neighbors when needed.

John will be greatly missed by his family, and was one of the remaining pillars of the Vieyra clan. His legacy will live through the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and his son; John David “Bullet” Vieyra.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen (Reyes) Vieyra; children, Sharon Vieyra, of Erie, CO., Delilah Sandoval, of Northglenn, CO., Diana (Orlando) Martinez, of Lafayette, CO., Mark (Theresa) Vieyra, Karen Vieyra, and Veronica Vieyra all of North Platte, Elaine Simon, Maywood NE and Carol (Tony) Alvarez, of Deming, NM. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren from North Platte, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Cards can be sent to Carmen at 2180 Alpine Drive, Erie, CO 80516. Online condolences at www.newcomerdenver.com
