In Memory Of
Nancy J. Einarsen
1929 - 2014

We celebrate the very full and active life of Nancy Einarsen - wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend, neighbor, teacher, traveler, storyteller, football fan, Colroadoan.

Nancy Jean was born on October 4th, three weeks before the great Stock Market Crash in 1929, to Paul C. and Willa B. Stevens. She has a younger brother, Charles F. Stevens, and a younger sister, Sally Krouch.

Nancy grew up in Wheat Ridge where her father was superintendent of schools. She met her future husband, Bob Einarsen in the 8th grade and became his steady in her senior year. Both graduated from Wheat Ridge High. She went on to major in Political Science with a minor in education at the University of Denver. As a freshman, Nancy joined the Kappa Delta Sorority, where she became its treasurer and later, president. Nancy valued education and would continue learning throughout her life by traveling across the US and abroad (she would visit Alaska in a camper, and later Europe, Japan, Antarctica), and by taking numerous workshops and courses during summer vacations and after her retirement. Her husband Bob graduated from the School of Mines, but would later get a teaching certificate from the University of Denver after a short stint of working with Shell Oil in Oklahoma and Texas.

Nancy and Bob were married on December 23rd, 1950 at the Wheat Ridge Methodist Church by Nancy's grandfather, Reverend Charles C. Stevens. They honeymooned in Aspen and then returned to finish their years at DU and Mines. Both became devoted teachers for the Denver public schools. Nancy worked as a 1st grade and kindergarten teacher for 27 years. She truly loved her classroom and the children she taught. She was a very creative, energetic, and caring teacher.

Nancy and Robert raised three children. John, the eldest (founding editor of Kyoto Journal), lives in Japan with his wife Midori. They have one son, Sage, who lives in Hoboken, New Jersey, and works as an illustrator, interpreter/guide, and cinematographer. Nancy and Bob's second eldest, Sue Ellen, lives and runs a capoeira (Brazilian martial art) school with her husband Bira in Berkeley, California. Their youngest, James, lives in El Paso, Texas with his wife Chrissi. He has been manager of various music stores there for the past 30 years.

After raising their children and retiring from teaching, Nancy and Bob built their cabin in South Park, which would become a cherished second home. Nancy became a professional storyteller with Spellbinders and told tales to the delight of countless children in Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, and Fairplay. She won the Germaine & Al Lictsch Award in 2002 for telling stories to 88 classrooms that year. Nancy loved the Pink Panther films, skied, played bridge, was a fierce Bronco fan, and life-long member of the Phillips United Methodist Church. She loved walking among Colorado's groves of golden aspen and created beautiful dinners for her family and relatives at Christmas and Thanksgiving. She was loved by everyone and will be deeply missed. A celebration of her life will be held at the Phillips United Methodist Church in Lakewood on February 11th at 11 am.

In Lieu of flowers, or if desiring to give a donation in memory of Nancy, you may contribute to Spellbinders, or a charity of your choice.
