Lydia Marie Jones
April 15, 1929 – January 15, 2015

Marie was the 4th child born to Ernest Frederick Schmitz and Mary Katherine (Lippert) Schmitz on April 15, 1929 in Denver. She had two older brothers, Walter Otto and Ernest Frederick Jr. and one sister, Gertrude, who died in her first year of life. The Schmitz family had a small truck farm and survived the depression by growing their own produce and selling asparagus and pansies. As a teenage girl Marie spent many weekends dancing to the big bands at the Trocadero Ballroom at the original Elitch Gardens. In high school she participated in track, most notably in the high jump and was also a cheerleader. Marie graduated from Union H. S. (now Ranum) in 1947.

She left home to attend college at Colorado State Teacher’s College (now University of Northern Colorado) in Greeley. During her freshman year, Marie met and became lifelong friends with her dorm mates at Belford Hall. The Belford Belles, as they call themselves, have met annually for many years during homecoming week at UNC.

Marie married fellow student David Andrew Jones of Denver on December 18, 1949. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in Home Economics and Science in 1951.

David and Marie started their family in Thermopolis, Wyoming but returned to Greeley in 1954 where David taught at Greeley High School. Marie’s teaching career was delayed while she and David raised their three children, David Jr., Carolyn and Steven. During her children’s’ young years she made custom draperies in a home workshop (a skill she had learned from her mother).

The family moved to Illinois and then Minnesota, where Marie finally began her teaching career in 1964. In 1967, the family returned to Greeley and Marie continued her teaching at Heath Junior High and John Evans Jr. High. David and Marie moved to Littleton in 1977 and Marie retired from teaching one year later after a year at Kiowa High School. She continued her home drapery and sewing business for several years after that.

Marie loved her family and blessed them with her hand knit afghans, stocking caps, crewels and most especially home cooked meals. Holidays were always a treat at the Jones house.

Marie lost her husband David, of almost 63 years on September 30, 2012 and moved to Lincoln Meadows Assisted Living in 2013.

After a short illness, Marie passed away on January 15, 2015 in Parker, CO.

Marie is survived by her children David Jr. of Ocean Beach, NY, Carolyn and son-in-law Casey Clark of Parker, CO, and Steven and daughter-in-law Teri Jones of Lone Tree, CO; grandchildren Lauren Pineda-Jones, David Jones III, Vanessa Clark Torrey, Trevor Clark, Jordan Clark, Andrew Jones, and Christopher Jones; and great grandchildren Tristan, Tanner and Mackenzie Torrey, and Zeekiel Clark.
