In Memory Of
Abner S. Zachry III
1932 - 2019

Abner Shelton Zachry, III passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2019 in Denver, CO at the age of 86. He was born to Abner and Ethelbert (Herring) Zachry on May 5, 1932 in Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in Texas and New Mexico, and graduated from Carlsbad H.S. in 1950. He served in the army and later received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M University. On August 4, 1956, Ab married the love of his life, Nellie Lee Jefferies, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas. They were married for 57 years.

Ab loved trying new things – tennis, golf, photography, gardening, music, and computers to name just a few. His children were inspired by his lifelong love of learning. As a devoted public school teacher, he passed this love on to his students in Brenham, TX; Crane, TX; Kermit, TX; and Grand Junction, CO.

Ab was preceded in death by his beloved Nellie. He is survived by son, Karl Scott Zachry and wife, Lael Wiseman of Denver, CO; daughter, Karen Louise Gardner and husband, Wayne of San Antonio, TX; eight grandsons, five great-grandchildren, and his brother, “Pete” Zachry.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Denver Hospice at
