In Memory Of
Hazel Jean "The Great One" Pleis
1922 - 2019
She was born September 4, 1922 in a farm house in Chester, Nebraska, the daughter of Lee and Christina (Crouse) Larkins. Hazel was a graduate of Chester High School. She received her teaching certificate from Normal School in Nebraska. On December 6, 1941 she married Leonard Pleis, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Hazel and Leonard were married for 69 and a half years before Leonard's passing in 2011.
Hazel was a very active member of her church and a member of the Dorcas Ladies who were her special friends. She was a very caring and compassionate woman. She was highly intelligent and driven. She highly valued education and strove to make sure all her children received their advanced degrees. Hazel was also an old-school quilter, quilting by hand. She was an excellent cook and gardener. Hazel loved canning and preparing a good meal with the vegetables she grew in her garden. She loved to entertain and would include everyone including their pets. Above all else, Hazel loved her family and grandchildren, some who called her "The Great One."
Hazel is survived by her children, Jeffery Pleis, Ronald (Felecia) Pleis, Rosalee Pleis, Charlotte (Jerry) Hartley, and Gloria (David) Tarket; eight grandchildren, Alan (Kayla) Hartley, Daniel Hartley (Jamie Warnken), Carolyn Thomas, Chris (Macy) Pleis, Nick (Tish) Pleis, Alecia Walls-Barton (Alex Barton), Jill (Thomas) Caranese, and Ryan Tarket (Tristan Cassilwatts); eight great-grandchildren with two on the way, Gloria Hartley, George Hartley, Payge Hartley, Connor Hartley, Dakota Thomas, Emerson Pleis, Ethan Pleis, Monroe Pleis, Leonardo Caranese, and Sebastian Caranese; and a host of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Otto Pleis; parents, Christina and Lee Larkins; daughter-in-law, Michal Pleis; one brother and five sisters; and one nephew.
