Colene Marie Lubbers passed away quietly in her sleep on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at age 88. She was born on October 15, 1931 in Trousdale, Kansas to Jacob and Francis Welsch. Later she moved to Lamar, where she graduated from Lamar Union High School, married Ken Lubbers, raised two sons and then moved to Denver.
While in Lamar, she sang at many weddings and funerals as well as on the local radio. After the move to Denver, she continued singing at church and with a group called Wednesday Morning Singers, who made the rounds of some nursing homes and sang to the residents.
Colene was a square dance set mother for Steve, a scout den mother for both her sons and never missed one of their sporting events. She enjoyed many sports and loved her Broncos. Over the years she enjoyed going to Avs and Mammoth games. She and Ken were very excited and fortunate to get tickets to Super Bowl 32 in San Diego to watch the Broncos win their first Super Bowl. She enjoyed traveling and went to England and Washington DC with friends. While in Washington DC, she went to the Smithsonian. She went with Ken to Disneyland, on an Alaskan cruise and to Las Vegas many times.
After working for the phone company as an operator, she was an office manager for Dr. George Williams in Lamar and then for doctors Dafoe and Thorne in Denver. She also completed an EMT course in 1972. After retiring at age 65, she was busy as ever, singing at her church, going to movies, traveling and seeing her many friends. Colene loved getting her hair done and went to the beauty shop weekly for years.
Colene is survived by her son Dennis and his wife Debbie, and son Steve and his wife Barbara and their son Travis. She is also survived by Debbie’s daughter Michelle and her husband Chris and son Ben. Colene's sister Claretta lives in Texas with her husband Henry, son Jeremiah and his wife Liubov. Colene's brother Darrell and his wife Barbara also live in Texas.
Colene is buried with Kenny's ashes at Fort Logan Cemetery. Services have been cancelled.
