In Memory Of
Walter McAlester Jr.
1939 - 2020

Walter McAlester was born on August 1, 1939 to Ethel Lee Hooks and Walter McAlester Sr. in Clarksville, Texas. Ethel later moved to Coffeyville, Kansas with Walter when he was 3 years old. Growing up Walter was very active in sports and the church. He received his primary education in Coffeyville, KS and was blessed to pursue a teaching degree at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS.

After being raised as an only child his mother later married Nimrod Gaffney and to this union they raised three children, Walter and his brother David Gaffney and sister Sherry Leapheart. In 1960, Walter married Madeline Neal and together they raised five children, Andrea, Michelle, Walter Steven, Byron and Janee.

Walter worked for Butternut Bread, Gates Rubber Company and retired after 35 years of service with United Airlines. Through his dedicated work, he focused on taking care of his wife and five children.

He spent his pass time fishing endlessly, riding his motorcycle with friends and cooking delicious soul food. Walter could tell a joke that could make a dog laugh. He loved to entertain with his wife and together they would host card parties with neighborhood friends.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, wife Madeleine McAlester and brother Ronnie. Walter leaves to cherish his memories five children: Andrea (Samuel) McIntosh, Michelle Robinson, W. Steve (Candace) McAlester, Byron (Kimberly) McAlester, and Janee (Kourtney) Woods; twelve grandchildren: Nicole, Chadwick, Stephen, Jevon, Ashley, Anshanay, Steven, Austin, Andrew, Kennedy, Kobe and Kelsey; fourteen great-grandchildren: Desiree, Zhana, Breon, Sean D, Austin, Samantha, Alexandra, Alivia, Jevon Jr., Keshawn, Javaeja, Jeremiah, Sy’nia and Josiah; three great-great grandkids: LaRaina, DeBralyn, Aurora; three brothers: David, James and Anthony; eight sisters: Sherry, Veneesa, Vanassa, June, Valerie, Alice, Lisa and Tiajuanna.
