William Paul Larson
1930 - 2020
While in Lincoln, Bill met Arlene Miller, a sociable and outgoing young woman who was the perfect match for his quiet nature. They married in June of 1956, then were stationed in El Paso, Texas, at Fort Bliss. Upon Bill’s discharge from the Army, Bill and Arlene moved to Denver, where they both found employment in the Jefferson County School System.
Bill taught History and Social Studies at Arvada High School and Pomona High School (where he also was a guidance counselor). He was known as an insightful and astute teacher, and he enjoyed his colleagues and students. Bill also earned Master’s Degrees in Teaching and in School Counseling. Before and after retirement, Bill and Arlene traveled the world to enjoy the history, culture, and people of different countries, including Russia, China, and most Europe and the US.
Bill had a sharp and inquisitive mind and was an avid student of politics, finances, geography, history, current events, and scripture. He was a devout and sincere follower of Jesus Christ, and this relationship formed the bedrock of his life. Bill was a model of generosity and grace. He was quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; he was a gentle man. Though reserved in disposition, Bill made many true and deep friendships over his lifetime, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Bill passed away at age 90 in Spokane, WA, on July 1, 2020, from complications from Parkinson’s disease. He faced his last days with courage and grace. Bill is survived by his children James (Cora), who live in the Netherlands, Europe, and Joann (Michael) Matiska, who live in Spokane, WA; grandchildren Lisanne, Joel, Marielle, Elizabeth, Brett, and Christina.
