Barbara Thompson was born in Haydock, England September 5, 1937 to parents Mary and Thomas Rowland. She died on May 2, 2022 in Aurora, CO.
Blessed with siblings Alban, Elizabeth, Graham, and Malcolm, she was a proud sister to all. Barbara lived her youth throughout World War II. She met her husband Walter Durwood Thompson, a Georgia native, while he was stationed overseas at Burtonwood RAF. The couple were married August 31st, 1957. Throughout her life, Barbara lived in Haydock, England, San Antonio, TX, Mildenhall, England, Sacramento, CA, Montgomery, AL, Oscoda, MI and Denver, CO. Barbara and Walter settled into their forever home in Denver, Colorado 1974, where she still resided up until her passing.
Barbara and Walter had two daughters together. Barbara shared a birthday with her eldest daughter. They welcomed Debra Judith, on September 5th, 1958 while stationed in Burtonwood, England. They soon after welcomed their second daughter, Adele, on November 29th, 1960, while stationed in San Antonio, TX.
Barbara never abandoned her roots as she immigrated to the United States. She was an active member of the TBPA, Transatlantic Brides Association, supporting fellow “war brides” and families immigrating to the US. Several of those individuals living both near and far, and their families, became dear lifelong friends of the couple. Many remain close friends to all the extended family today. Barbara also routinely traveled home to England as often as possible to visit with family and to celebrate milestone occasions. Her heritage was something she proudly bestowed on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Barbara and Walt made many friends throughout their lives. Be it bowling, bingo, or golf, Barb had the corner. She crafted her ability to shop for bargains into something of a fine art and was fondly known for her frugal yet generous ways. Something she was frequently admired for. She also had a strong talent for knitting and made several handmade items for family and friends over the years. Baby cardigans and pram suits were probably her most popular and sought-after creations.
She was known as Gran to the generations that loved and needed her most. Known as GG, to the ones she absolutely lived for in most recent years.
Barbara took an active interest in the lives of her loved ones. From attending recitals and sporting events, to the traditional milestones in life, she always extended an effort to be present. Family and friends were always important to her. Something she demonstrated in how she lived.
Barbara will be deeply missed by all of the loved ones she leaves behind. She is survived by her daughters Debra Zahn (children Matthew Calkins, Lauren Dorman, Marissa Zahn) and Adele Waits (children Justin Burns, Eric Burns, and Kristin Harrison), and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, and her loving husband, Walter Thompson.
