He spent his youth in Salida, CO attending St Joseph Grade School and Salida High School and completed one year at Pueblo Junior College. He served in the US Army from 1959 to 1962 and was stationed in Korea. Upon discharge he returned to live in Colorado. For over 30 years he was employed by Lockheed Martin in property management and contracts.
Mick married Louella (Lou) Luettel on November 28, 1964. They raised two daughters, Julie Kay and Jan Renee living in the Green Mountain neighborhood for 42 years.
Mick’s leisure time was spent playing golf, coaching basketball, cheering at Green Mountain Swim Club, and enjoying family and friends. He loved supporting Denver sports teams including attending Denver Broncos games as a season ticket holder for 12 years and traveling to AZ to watch Rockies Spring Training for 10 years. He loved spending time after retirement wintering with friends in sunny Tucson, Arizona.
Mick leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Lou, daughters Julie Manuel (Dan) of Lucas, Texas, and Jan McElhiney (Ben) of Centennial, Colorado. Also, grandchildren Connor and Collin Manuel, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL, Mackenzie McElhiney, California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, CA and Keira McElhiney, Arapahoe High School, Centennial, CO. Other family left behind include his brother Tim Commerford and sister Nora Commerford Smith of Canon City, Colorado.
