James (“Jim”) Edward Schiller was born on November 29, 1945. He grew up in Oyster Bay, New York, along with four older sisters and one younger brother.
As a boy, he made money by selling clams that he had dug up at the shore, returning bottles for deposits, shoveling snow, and doing other odd jobs. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Army and served as an armor reconnaissance scout.
While on leave from the Army in 1965, he married Sue Langa, whom he had met through mutual friends. He had just turned 20. Sue was 19. Jim was honorably discharged from the service in 1967.
The couple moved to Colorado to be closer to Sue’s sister, Kathy, and her family. Unable to have children, they adopted Bryan in 1972 and Heather in 1974. The couple split in 1983 but reconciled and married each other a second time in 1988. They both said getting back together was the best decision of their lives.
Jim was a hard worker who did a variety of jobs, including garbage man, retail sales, truck driver, truck loading dock worker, and security escort. In his free time, he enjoyed renovating the house, gardening, hunting, fishing, bowling, playing the lottery, and “coaching” the Denver Broncos from his living room chair. He was also an excellent disco dancer and pool player.
Jim had an outgoing personality and a great sense of humor. He loved being a grandfather of three, as well as “Poppy” to his nieces and nephews. He also loved pets, especially his dog, Duke, and his cats Taz and Ziggy.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) forced Jim to retire in March 2021. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones on June 1, 2023, at the age of 77.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Winifred, his sisters Rosemary, Patty, and Barbara. He is survived by his wife, Sue, his son, Bryan, his daughter, Heather, and his grandchildren, Mark, Jostyn, and Ella, his sister, Winnie, his brother, Bill, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 10 at
