1Sg George Clever Jr. (Ret.)

1SG Martin George "Marty" Clever Jr. (Ret.) passed away October 29, 2016 in Aurora, Colorado.

He was born on June 14, 1936 in Hemet, California. He grew up in Southern California.

Marty joined the US Army in 1953 at Age 17 and was drafted into Company A, 350th Infantry Regiment. He was an Army Ranger and served in Austria, IndoChina and Viet Nam. When he returned from the War, Marty was a drill sergeant, training and influencing hundreds of young soldiers over the years. He retired from the Army in 1973 after more than 20 years of active duty. He then served in the Army for 27 years as a Junior ROTC instructor, training and influencing thousands of high school students. He wore the US Army uniform for a total of 47 years.

Martin married Sieglinde Friedwagner in Salzburg, Austria on July 19, 1955. She passed away in 1993. He then married Carol J. Bartz-Black in Golden, Colorado on August 19, 1994.

Marty was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Elks. He was active at the Thornton Senior Center.

He enjoyed playing poker with friends. Marty also loved going fishing and camping with his family. He enjoyed traveling. He will be remembered as an avid Denver Broncos fan.

Martin is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Carol; 9 children, Fred (Marie) Clever, Lynda Mapp, Martin G. Clever Jr. IV, Mitchell (Sylvia) Clever, Debra Jueneman, Michael Clever, Rebecca (George) Metcalf, Barbara (Craig) Duncan and Brian Black; Grandchildren, Jaime Marks, Kyle (Brad) Baur, Doyle Thompson, Raymond (Wendy) Mapp, Sheena (Kendahl) Mack, Ginger Clever, Christopher Solano, Aubrey Clever, Vincent (Jasmine) Eraquam, Joshua (Stephanie) Eraquam, Tonja (Kenny) Brunemier-Pierce, JJ Metcalf, Carla (DL) Ward, Aaron (Shannon) Jergenson and Jessica Van Deusen; 18 great-grandchildren and Many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sieglinde; his parents; 2 sisters; 1 brother and grandson, Joshua Mapp.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to The Foundation of Hope at Lutheran Church of Hope.
