Alfred John Songy, Sr.

Alfred ("Al") John Songy, Sr, passed into the nearer presence of God on Saturday, May 20, 2017, in Aurora, Colorado. The youngest of eight children, Al was born March 11, 1935 to Gaston Joseph and Magda Landaiche Songy in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Al married Claire Burkhardt on September 1, 1956. The couple was blessed with six children, John (Diana) Songy, Joseph (Patsy) Songy, Paul Songy, Fr. David Songy, Michelle (Bruce) Raymond and Ann Songy.

Al's strong Roman Catholic faith and participation in the Charismatic Renewal movement served as strength and guide through his varied career.

In 1971 Al, Claire, and their children moved to Denver where he enjoyed working for the Archdiocese of Denver at Spirit's Runway and as a youth retreat director at Camp St. Malo in Allenspark, Colorado. Claire died in January 1978 after a battle with cancer. Al then married Anna Haywood, who preceded him in death in August 2016.

Following his retirement, Al shared his faith with many as a member of Queen of Peace Parish. He loved talking about his grandchildren, and was particularly fond of playing games. Some of his favorite time was spend playing cards or dominoes with anyone who wanted to join. Al always played to win; he started each game with announcing "the name of this game is Al wins".

In all things, Al was taken by the wonder of Christ and remained devoted to the Rosary.

In addition to his six children, Al is survived by his sister, Magda Songy Burkhardt, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

As father, brother, grandfather, mentor and friend, he will be missed by all.
