Alvin "Al" Blacksher
Al was born July 21, 1933 in McLean, Texas and passed away from this life on June 5, 2015.
Al was very proud of his Texas Heritage and that is where he developed a love for the rodeo and participated in all the events that the rodeo had to offer. He was also very active in football, track and boxing.
After graduating from High School at age 17, Al joined the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served from 1951 to 1954 as a Torpedoman's Mate abroad the Escort Destroyer USS Walker DD517. Al was very proud of his military service and his medals of honor.
Following his military commitment, Al relocated to Roswell, New Mexico where he became an apprentice Electrician. Upon finishing his apprenticeship, he moved to Grants, New Mexico to work on a traveling construction crew which is where he pursued his exciting and challenging 35 year career with Mountain Bell. He continued to advance in various capacities which relocated him to Albuquerque where he made his home for several years. In 1978 he was transferred to Denver, Colorado where he completed his career with US West.
He was a very talented and knowledgeable man and was selected to represent US West on several committees and implementation projects with all the Bell Companies. Al was very proud of his accomplishments and his contributions throughout his career.
After retirement, Al's way of thinking was to keep one's mind and body active which enabled him to build three family homes. He was also able to demonstrate his woodworking skills, in which he used to craft many cherished pieces for his grandchildren.
Al was blessed with three sons, Claude, Robert and John from a previous marriage. He was very proud of each of them. His oldest son Claude and grandson Michael also served in the United States Navy making it a three generation tradition.
His youngest son John proudly served in the United States Army during Dessert Storm. His grandson Justin is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps.
Al met and married the love of his life Donita in 1981. They shared 33 wonderful years together working, traveling and enjoying life. They loved to dance, water ski and snow ski, attended sporting events and entertained friends and family to poker parties and visits to the casinos. They spent several winters in Arizona where special friendships were made.
Al's heroes in life were Louis L'Amour, John Wayne and Norman Rockwell. He was an avid reader of L'Amour's books and enjoyed all of John Wayne's movies and admired many of Norman Rockwell's paintings some of which he owned. Al also had a gift of writing poetry. He mainly shared those poems with his cherished wife Dee.
Al was well known for coming through with his one liner whit. We also remember Al's love for a vanilla milk shake anytime day or night. Everyone that knew Al has their own special memory.
Al lived his life with the courage and purpose which most people strive for. His love, laughter, friendliness and kindness will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver Donita, three sons Claude, Robert and John; brother Charles Jones and sister-in-law Ruth; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and other relative and friends. In addition, he felt honored being a Godfather to Michael, Shane and Beauden.
He was preceded in death by his parents Homer C. Blacksher and Wynona Fay Henley; step-father Edwin Jones and sister Bonnie Darnell.
