ANTHONY "TONY" J. GUZOWSKI
SEPTEMBER 10, 1922 – MARCH 21, 2016
Anthony ("Tony") J. Guzowski, was born 9/10/22 in Iron River, Michigan, the fourth child of John and Helen Guzowski. Predeceased by son Thomas, brothers, Stanley and Zigmund, and sister Jean Snow. Predeceased by wife Donna M. Guzowski (Denver, CO). Survived by brother Frank and wife Mary (Iron River), sister-in-law, Esther Guzowski (Iron River, MI), sons Bill (Green Bay, WI), James (Iron River), Michael (San Manuel, AZ), daughters Donna Gritton (Evanston, IL), Toni Smith (Columbia, SC), and Helen Jean Dallas (Green Bay, WI).
He graduated from Iron River High School in 1941 and immediately enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where served in the South Pacific during WWII.
Tony played on the USMC basketball team before joining the Hawkeyes, where he was a two-sport letterman for the University of Iowa. He served as basketball co-captain in 1949. He was a top amateur basketball player and was named MVP of the Iowa Veteran's Tournament. He received the Iowa Athletic Board Trophy for Excellence in Scholarship and Athletics, and turned down a tryout with the NFL New York Giants because of a knee injury. He then became a successful football coach at Algona and East Waterloo High Schools. Tony taught school in Iowa and Colorado and retired from teaching in 1985, after 35 years.
In 2003, Tony was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.
Tony was a Life Member of the VFW #4331 and the Lakewood Elks #1777, for 30 years.
