Arnold Wayne Gabriel

January 18, 1943 — February 2, 2014

Arnold Wayne "Butch" Gabriel, 71, from Denver, Colorado passed away on February 2nd, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend and will be sorely missed by all who had the distinct pleasure of knowing him.

Known as "Butch" to his family and "Arnie" to his friends, he was born in Geddes, South Dakota to Laurel Duba in 1943. He spent his childhood on a farm under the care of his maternal grandparents, Stanley and Lydia Duba of Platte, South Dakota. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball, before joining the Army after high school. He was stationed in Fort Ord, California where he earned an expert marksman badge and achieved the rank of Sergeant.

After an honorary discharge from the military, he moved to Denver, Colorado where he met Mary Jane "Janie" Horner of Springfield, Colorado. They were married in 1966 and Janie gave birth to a son, Eric, in November of the same year. Shortly thereafter, they moved to California and then New York, where they lived until 1981. They returned to Lake Elsinore, California, living there a number of years until Janie passed away in 1995. Arnold relocated to be with his family in Colorado shortly after and met Debbie Ann Smulders. They were married soon after and they spent their remaining years together in Missouri until recently relocating back to Colorado in 2014, due to the extent of his illness.

Arnold worked tirelessly in the billiard industry for four decades, earning a reputation as one of the top salesmen in the industry and later, as a respected consultant. When he wasn't working, he loved to spend time with his family and his pets, work in his garden, play golf, read books, and watch his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers play baseball.

He is survived by his mother, Laurel Bick; his wife, Debbie; his son, Eric Gabriel; his stepson, William; his sisters, Marlene (and her husband, Terry Tiffany) and Karlene (and her husband, Steve Martin); his nieces Cindy (and her husband, Alex Braun) and Kim (and her husband, Loren Connell), and his nephews, Christopher Tiffany (and wife, Cori) and Bryce Martin. He was preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Darrell Bick and his sister-in-law, Bertie Bick.
