Barbara J. McKinney, Ph.D. (1932-2015)
Barbara was born in Denver, Colorado on August 28, 1932. On March 9, 2015, she earned her wings into heaven. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna & Walt McKinney and her brother W. Frank McKinney. She is survived by her two children, Evelyn (Eva) McKinney and Abraham McKinney; sisters Rosann (Rose) McKinney and Madalyn (Mandy) McKinney; niece Stephanie (Phil) Chastagner and nephew Jefferson (Linda) McKinney, and numerous beloved family members and friends.
Barbara's legacy is amazing. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Ph.D. in English Literature and a degree in Music. Her tenure as a college professor includes, Texas A&M University, University of Wyoming, University of Minnesota, University of Toledo and Colorado School of Mines.
She was also a dedicated community servant, advocating for the best interest of neglected and abused children as a Court Appoint Special Advocate (CASA) in both Toledo, OH and Denver, CO.
Barbara loved gardening and was very involved with the Toledo Herb Society. Her flavorful dishes always contained a 'fresh from the garden' seasoning. She also loved music! She was accomplished in the Upright Bass and even played in a band in Chicago! She loved the Rocky Mountains and cherished the good times at the cabin with family. She loved to travel and went to Europe, Turkey and Asia.
Last, but certainly not least, Barbara loved the Lord. She was very active in her church community and served in numerous roles. She truly enjoyed working at the Fish Fry's during Lent.
Barbara was fiercely independent, curious about life, a student of her craft, passionate educator and a loving mother. She will continue to be cherished through vibrant memories and wonderful stories that illustrate a life well-lived.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 14th at St. Paul's Lutheran & Roman Catholic Community of Faith at 5PM at 1600 Grant St., Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the Alzheimer's Association in your city.
