Bobbie L. Lewis

October 18, 1932 — July 16, 2014

Bobbie Lou Lewis – 81
Bobbie died on July 16, 2014, at home, surrounded by her children and extended family. She is survived by her daughters Kelly Lewis and Joni Smith (Mike), step-son Mark Lewis (Alison), six grandchildren, Cory, Celia, Lexi, Joaquin, Ava, and Maria, sister Anita Merle Berger, several cousins, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Leon Lewis, sisters Opal Rae Bosco and Dorothy Jean Harris, and half brother, James Boothe.
Bobbie was born on October 18, 1932, in Mead, Oklahoma, where she was raised by her Dad, Walter, Mead's Post Master and our beloved Mom Boothe. She loved to play basketball and was the basketball "star" at Mead High School. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma's Southeastern State College in Durant, Oklahoma, where she met and married her husband Morris "Ham" and later, "Mory" Lewis on September 4, 1954, and celebrated 55 years together. They soon moved to Chicago, Illinois, for a short time where Ham worked on his Ph.D. Ham and Bobbie began their overseas adventure in Ethiopia where Ham worked with the U.S. Agency for International Development and their first daughter Kelly was born. They soon moved to Tehran, Iran, where Joni was born 17 months later. While overseas, Bobbie stayed home and cared for her daughters before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1963. She then went to work as the executive assistant for the president of Phillips Petroleum until 1967 when the family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Bobbie got her first of many positions with the Federal Government. After about three years, Ham accepted a new Federal government position and the Lewis's made their final move to the beautiful State of Colorado, and the now vibrant city of Lakewood. Bobbie retired in 1995 from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management after 31 years of Federal service with various agencies. Not surprisingly, she always worked as the executive assistant for the "chief" executive in each of her positions. Bobbie loved her work, but sacrificed moving up in her career so she could always be home with her family. After retiring, she continued to be Mory's executive assistant in his political adventures and during his service as the Regional National Field Vice-President for the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). She too was an active participant in NARFE and won national recognition as well as the local 7 News Everyday Hero award for her significant financial contribution to the National Alzheimer's Association by recycling cans she collected across Lakewood. Through the years, she loved each of her kitty cats and enjoyed playing bridge and dominos with family and friends, cooking, entertaining, shopping, and crocheting. Her Belgian waffles on Christmas Day are legendary! Bobbie was always a devoted wife, "Moma," and Grandma. She always attended both of her daughters' numerous sports events and activities during school and for years thereafter, and did the same for her grandchildren for as long as she could. Her family finally got the chance to cheer for her when well into her 70's, Bobbie's love of basketball led her to play with the "Colorado Columbines," a senior women's basketball league with which she also participated in the Huntsman World Senior Games in Utah. Bobbie's TV channel was always on the current professional tennis match, basketball game, or catching up on General Hospital. She fought a long and tenacious fight against a very rare form of cancer with great strength, courage, and dignity. Bobbie loved her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren and was a constant presence in their lives. She was a wonderful wife, Moma, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, grandma, and friend. Kind, gracious, talented, and beautiful inside and out; Bobbie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 1390 Brentwood Street, Lakewood, Colorado. A reception will follow immediately after, at the same location. All are welcome.
