Carol McAvoy (born Carol Alm), daughter and second of two children to Emil and Minnie Alm was born January 19, 1941 in Denver, CO and passed away on October 12, 2014 at the Denver Hospice in Denver, CO.
Carol grew up in Colorado graduating from South High School in Denver and attending the University of Colorado Boulder for two years. After college Carol moved for a brief period to San Francisco before coming back to Colorado permanently. On January 7, 1969 Carol married Kenneth Jeffers and to this union her only biological children Kim and Greg were born. She welcomed her first granddaughter (Kim's daughter) Savannah in 1998. Greg married Sara Jelosek and they soon gave Carol two more granddaughters Alexis and Olivia Jeffers. On February 4, 2004 she married Earl McAvoy and became the stepmother to his two sons Nick and Shawn as well as grandmother to Earl's grandson Brian McAvoy. Brian married Michaela and soon they gave her three wonderful great-grandchildren Chaeleigh, Kinleigh and Bryant.
Carol enjoyed a career as an administrative assistant and although she worked in the profession until her retirement in 2004, she did not define herself by this role alone. Carol also defined herself in her dedication to her family as well as her work in the community.
Carol's dedication to her family was apparent from the time her children were born. She never missed a flag football game of Greg's nor a gymnastics competition of Kim's. She always was at her children's Field Days and was chaperone on many a school field trip. When her grandchildren were born she made it a point to be an integral part of their lives. She volunteered at Savannah's school as well as spending at least one day a week with her just being grandma. She was lucky enough to spend one day a week in her retirement with Alexis and when Olivia was born this last year she melted with every infant smile. She also loved her great-grandbabies dearly and would brag about them to anyone who would listen.
Carol's dedication did not end with her family however since she was active in her community as well. She and Earl became greeters at their church and this lead to many new friendships in the Colorado Community Church community. She also enjoyed the South High School reunion group and was active in the Tamarac and University Hills Optimist club. She fulfilled her dream in 2012 when she became the president of the Monaco South Optimist club. She loved giving her time to the Scottish Festival and pouring beer at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival every year to make money for the club. Among her various volunteer activities she worked with first graders making the "I Like Me" books and volunteered and Brent's Place on a regular basis.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents Emil and Minnie Alm and brother Alvin Alm. She is survived by her husband Earl McAvoy, children Kim Ellison and Greg Jeffers, daughter-in-law Sara Jeffers, niece Jessica Alm and grand-nephew Joseph Alm. Granddaughters Savannah Ellison, Alexis Jeffers and Olivia Jeffers. Step children Nick and Shawn McAvoy. Grandchildren Brian and Michaela McAvoy and great-grandchildren Chaeleigh, Kinleigh and Bryant McAvoy.
