Ms. Carol Ann Van Lew passed away on March 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that touched the lives of many.
Carol is survived by her brother, Robert A. Brecka, and her sister, Debra Lynn Honeycutt. She is also lovingly remembered by her six children—Lila, Rhonda, Sherri, Tammy, Lyle Jr., and Kandi—as well as her 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
Carol was born in Berrien Springs, Michigan, one of five children. At the age of 20 she became a military spouse, and by age 25 she found herself the devoted mother of six children. Life was often busy and demanding, but Carol embraced it with determination and grace. While raising her family, she worked as a waitress to help support the household. She was always on the move—cooking meals, cleaning, caring for her children, and keeping a home running smoothly. Despite the constant motion of daily life, she took great pride in raising her children and providing them with love and guidance.
As a military wife, Carol lived in several places throughout the years. She was raised in Michigan and later spent many years living in Kansas. After her divorce, she moved to Arkansas, where she lived for 23 years. In 2022, she relocated to Colorado to be closer to her daughter Rhonda.
Carol later dedicated nearly 20 years of her life as a Certified Nurse Assistant, a role that reflected her naturally caring heart. She truly loved helping others and valued the personal connections she made through her work. Providing comfort and care to those in need brought her deep fulfillment, and many people were touched by her kindness and compassion.
Faith was an important part of Carol’s life. She had a deep sense of spirituality and remained active in her church throughout her life, continuing to attend services regularly even in her later years.
Carol also had a special love for animals and formed close bonds with the pets she encountered throughout her life. Most recently, she adored Mocha, her Chihuahua-Pug companion, whom she helped raise and train. Mocha brought her great joy and companionship.
In quieter moments, Carol enjoyed crocheting, a hobby that allowed her to relax while creating handmade gifts for family and friends. She also loved gardening, taking pleasure in nurturing plants and creating beautiful surroundings wherever she lived.
Carol was known for her warm personality and outgoing nature. She often said, “I’ve never met a stranger,” and truly meant it. She loved meeting new people, striking up conversations, and getting to know those around her.
Carol spent the final three years of her life in Colorado. Despite facing numerous health challenges, she bravely battled and survived lung cancer. These years became a meaningful and joyful chapter of her life. Her health improved significantly, allowing her to enjoy life more fully. She traveled, spent cherished time with family and friends, remained active in church, went to the gym, shopped independently, and enjoyed taking walks with Mocha.
Carol’s life was defined by resilience, kindness, faith, and deep love for her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of those she loved.
In lieu of flowers, Carol's family has requested donations be made in her honor to Big Bones Dog Rescue.
