Charles Richard Welz was born November 19, 1926 at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver Colorado. He was a very special gift and the only child of Charles and Sadie Welz. Raised in North Denver he graduated from North High School in 1944. After graduation he worked as a U.S. Postman from June 1944 - December 1944 and then enlisted in the Navy December 1944. We are sure that he must have been the friendliest Postman on the job! Charles performed duties in the Pacific Theater as Fleet Mailman until his discharge from the Navy June 19, 1946. Along with enlisting in the reserves he went to work for Woodman of the World Insurance Company and was admitted to the University of Denver School of Administration in August of 1947.
It was on a blind date Charles was introduced to the love of his life, Clarice Dorothy Johnson. Wow, two of the finest were married June 19, 1949. This was the union of two exceptional, committed people! Charles went to work for Prudential June 1950 and was called back to the Navy for the Korean Conflict January 1951. He served as Teleman 2 rank with PBY Patrol Squadron 731 in the Asiatic Theater, separated from active duty May 1952 and discharged June 27, 1954 from the Naval Reserves. We thank you Charles for your love and devotion to us and our Country. Charles and Clarice began their family in 1953 with their son Richard Charles, followed by Janell Carol in 1954, Scott Allen in 1957 and a wonderful surprise Cheryl Lynn in 1960. These four children were extremely blessed to grow up with a father and husband that was loving, fun, committed and a man of integrity. He worked hard at attending all games, events, special occasions, and in fact he created occasions to celebrate. Family meal times were special and important. These traditions were carried on with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He gave his family wonderful memories, one of life's most cherished gifts. Many great memories were created on camping and hunting trips with friends and family. He rarely missed his target! The family was always graced with his wonderful sense of humor and caring heart. He had a special way that would make anyone around him comfortable. All the grandchildren knew of the unwritten "Rule Book" and that bacon put hair on your chest. He loved giving the children a high five, talking like Donald Duck, and all the fun that goes along with being a grandfather.
He knew family and friends were your greatest gift. He supported this great family working for Prudential Insurance Company for 33 years. He worked hard and had a host of friends, both co-workers and clients. He took care of many clients in a very personal way; that was his way. His highly esteemed wife of 54 years looked forward to traveling in his retirement. They had the privilege of sharing many trips across the ocean and state side. He was blessed to enjoy over 30 years of retirement with his family and friends. We were really the ones that were blessed by him. This past year he seemed to be getting a bit more tired. Charles never made a fuss over himself and always said that he was fine, a military man at heart.
The angels took him home on September 5, 2013, but he will forever live in our hearts and his legacy in our lives. He is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
