David R. Akers dided October 29, 2005. He was the first and, for several years, the only Pediatric Surgeon in Colorado. He was 97.
He was born in Denver on February 27, 1908 but spent his childhood years in Monte Vista, Colorado. He was a graduate of Lakeview High School in Chicago in 1926, Yankton College in South Dakota in 1930 and The University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1936.
During the summer of 1936, he served as CAmp Doctor for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp.), unit NP2a, stationed on the South Rim of Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Following an internship, he died General Practice in Erie, Colorado from 1937 to 1942. At that time, the town had a population of about 100 and was the commercial hub for seven surrounding active coal mines which produced much of the coal which was used to heat the homes in Denver prior to their beingconverted to the use of natural gas.
