Donald C. Laverty, 84, of McHenry, Illinois, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Fox Point Memory Care Facility in McHenry, surrounded by friends and family. He was born April 4, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Anna (Feeney) Laverty. On Feb. 18, 1984, he married Gloria "Dee" Binkley in McHenry.
He was a retired U.S. Army first Sergeant with 26 years of active service. He served in the 101st Airborne in World War II, and as an Airborne Ranger in Korea. He was awarded the Army Bronze Star Medal for Valor while serving in Korea. He also served one tour in Vietnam. After his wartime service, he served as Senior NCO for college Army ROTC in Ohio and Colorado training future Army officers.
He and Dee lived in McHenry since 1984 and were active at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria "Dee" Laverty; Five daughters, Susie (Bill) Conway of Poolesville, MD., Kathy (Dennis) Perry of Mesa, AZ, Ellen (Mike) Barnard of Aurora, Billie (Wayne) Boughton of Aurora and Patti Wallace of Greeley; 13 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren; a great-great- grandchild; a brother, Harry (Carole) Davies of Xenia, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Margaret Santa Crose, Marion Radmand and Ellen Laverty; and three brothers, Bill Laverty, Robert Laverty and David Laverty.
Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery on June 22, 2011 at 12:15 PM Stage area "C".
