Listen to Obituary

Doris Roberts James was the eldest of three children born in Glennville, Georgia, to Daniel and Minnie Grantham Roberts. Entering this world on June 14, 1925, she passed away peacefully over a century later March 5, 2026. Her childhood years were happy and filled with love. Educated in her hometown of Glennville, she blossomed in the security of the home made for her by her parents and support from her extended family and close-knit southern community. Doris embraced Christianity as early in her life as one can remember. She was devout in her belief and became a faithful, dedicated servant throughout her entire life.

Doris met and married Herbert H. James, a career U.S. Army serviceman. Together they lived in various areas of the United States to include California, Georgia, Alabama and Virginia (where she became affiliated with Alexander Church of God in Alexander, VA), and in Mannheim, Germany. This family was blessed by three devoted daughters: Shirley, Rosemary and Carolyn. In almost every area where they were located, Doris involved herself in doing the Lord’s work. She was a dedicated Sunday School and Children’s Church teacher for which she received numerous certificates and awards. She also volunteered for a street outreach program.

Several years after her husband’s death in 1988, Doris relocated to Denver, Colorado, to be near two of her daughters. There she continued to be active in Church, first with Fountain of Life (Denver, CO) and then with Shepherd's Touch Home Ministries (Aurora, CO) and New Beginnings Christian Fellowship (Aurora, CO), where she worshipped until she became incapacitated due to ill health.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Minnie Roberts; her brother, Charles; and her husband, Herbert. Left to celebrate her life and cherish her memory are her daughters, Shirley Ann Bunch (Denver, CO); Rosemary James (Carol Stream, IL); and Carolyn James Hudson (Aurora, CO); her grandchildren,Tonya Porter (Carol Stream, IL); Sonji Farrell (Harrisburg, N.C.); Keith Porter (Los Angeles (CA); Steceban Hudson (Aurora, CO); Kelly Porter (Glennville, GA); Tara Bunch (Asheville, N.C.); Rhonda (Joel) Ansier (Naperville, IL); and adopted granddaughter Turquoise (Byl) Walker (Burke, VA); her seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Rev. Dr. Lillie Pearl Taylor (Glennville, GA), along with nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives, extended family and close friends.

"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing." II Timothy 4:6
