Dorothy Joan Luzum was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on December 29, 1922, and passed into Heaven on January 5, 2015 at the age of 92. She was the first child born to Godfrey Jandik, a baker from Czechoslovakia, and Mamie Jandik (Shimek), who was a housewife. She had three brothers, Stanley, Jerome & Leonard Jandik, all from Cedar Rapids.
As a young woman, she worked many different jobs, such as a department store Christmas gift wrapper at May D&F, an assembler at Samsonite Luggage, and even worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" for the B-24 Liberator Bomber for the WWII war effort. She loved writing letters and had pen pals both locally & abroad.
Though her beauty brought many suitors, on June 27, 1946, Dorothy married Clarence J. Luzum, a U.S. Army First Lieutenant, who had just returned from military service in Europe. Together they had three handsome sons, Gary, Duane & Larry Luzum, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dorothy loved to cook great food and travel with her family. California and Las Vegas were two of her favorite destinations. She loved to play the nickel slot machines – the winnings from which funded some great vacations! She also enjoyed taking photographs, and amassed a large collection of family and travel photos. She was never without her camera and her red purse!
Dorothy loved to laugh and have fun, especially with her sons & their families. Always an adoring wife, mother & grandmother, she was loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, Dorothy is survived by sons, Gary and wife, Carol, Duane, and Larry and wife, Charlene; by grandchildren, Ross, Gina, Shelby, Ryan, Christopher, Alex and David; by great grandchildren Payton, Joe, Rachel, Joshua, Riley, Teagan and Caden; and also by her brothers, Jerome and Leonard Jandik.
She will be laid to rest with her husband, Clarence Luzum, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
