Edward Ross Bingham
Edward Ross Bingham, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Lakewood, Colorado, on January 19th, 2015.
Ed had a distinguished career in the mining industry and was known for his honest character, his wit, and his intelligence. A lifelong learner and reader, he loved hunting, difficult crossword puzzles, and oysters – not necessarily in that order.
Ed led a courageous life. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 he enlisted in the navy at age of 15 – a freshman in high school weighing 115 pounds, signing papers that he was 17 years old. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific throughout WWII. He also served the nation in the Korean War.
Attending Indiana University after the war, Ed met Lois Swan on a blind date and asked her to marry him that very night. Ed graduated with a BS in Geology from the University of Utah and joined Kennecott Mining Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. He jokingly called the huge copper mine, Bingham Canyon, "the family mine" though there was no relationship.
Moving to Copper Range Mining Company in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Ed was at the forefront of environmental mining reclamation, helping to write regulations and receiving numerous awards. He finished his career in Denver, Colorado, as president of AMAX Resources. He was a member of Cherry Hills Country Club.
Retirement was an adventure for Ed. He was a warm father and grandfather who took grandkids Hunter and Sarah on nature walks, let them beat him at poker, and attended every single baseball game.
Ed is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Lois, and his children, Joseph Bingham, married to Kristy, Nancy Wiebmer, married to John, five grandchildren (Hunter, Sarah, Megan, Mollie, Andrea) and six great-grandchildren.
A military memorial service will be held on March 13, 2015, at 11:00 am at Fort Logan Cemetery, 4400 West Kenyon Avenue, Denver, CO 80236. Please arrive at Staging Area A before 10:45 am and remain in your car. You will be directed to the location of the outdoor service.
