Listen to Obituary

Elayne Mae Bartels was born on February 27, 1927 to Lester Bartels and Ella Bartels (Hellweg) on their farm outside of Laurel, Nebraska. Elayne was the second child born to the Bartels, her sister Dee had been born 7 years before on December 25, 1920. Elayne attended country school and grew up on her parent’s farm. Elayne attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska where she received her teaching degree and began teaching in Hartington, Nebraska. There she met and married a fellow teacher and her lifelong love, Robert L. Jacobson on December 27, 1951.

On January 16, 1956 they were blessed with the arrival of their son Layne Russell. They had moved shortly after his birth to Westminster, Colorado. Kent Christian was born two years later. Elayne and Robert had an incredibly special group of friends that they referred to “the Nebraska Bunch”. They eventually all moved to the Denver area and holidays and special occasions were always celebrated together.

Elayne taught for many years in the elementary school system in Adams County. It was not unusual to be out with her in Westminster and be met by one of her past students who clearly valued their time with her as teacher.

Elayne was a devout Lutheran and for her entire life read, studied and lived by the Bible’s teachings. She attended her church, Advent Lutheran, from it’s opening, and was instrumental in supporting many of its programs.

Elayne was an excellent golfer and followed all manner of sports, especially her son’s and grandson’s football and baseball games. Her growing up on a farm had made her into excellent gardener. Many plants that originally grew in her mother’s yard in Laurel were transferred and graced her yard as well. Elayne and Robert traveled after retirement, visiting Germany and other locations in Europe.

Robert passed on October 30, 2011. Other family members who preceded her in death were her sister Dee, and her parents.

Family members include her sons, Layne Jacobson and Kent Jacobson, grandsons, Brandon and Eric Jacobson. Great Grandchildren Kyle and Keylea Chatman and Nixon and Hoven Jacobson and great great grandchild Amelia Chatman.

Memorial Services will be held at 12:00 PM, Saturday January 24, 2026 at Advent Lutheran Church 7979 Meade Street, Westminster, CO 80030. Reception to follow. Donations are to go Advent Lutheran Church.

Elayne will be laid to rest with her husband Robert L. Jacobson at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
