Elsie Mae Hein, 84, of Lakewood, ended her earthly life surrounded by loving family on Saturday, August 2, 2014, of complications from a hemorrhagic stroke.
She was born in Culbertson, Nebraska on December 21, 1929 to the late Christian (Chris) and Katherina (Kate) Miller. She graduated from Culbertson High School with honors in 1947. While at Culbertson High School she served as Senior Class President, pitcher of the softball team and a member of various clubs. She married the late Alfred Dean Hein, in 1948, and they lived together in Lincoln, Lexington and McCook, Nebraska before moving to Thornton, Colorado and finally settling in Lakewood, Colorado.
Elsie was an active, engaged and connected individual throughout her entire life. When her children were very small, she and Alfred led the youth group in their church in Lexington, NE. As her children grew she was involved in PTA, served as a Den Mother, helped with Girl Scouts and relished in her role as full time homemaker. Throughout her children's youth, she also provided office manager and accounting support for her husband's small business enterprises.
Later, she took a full time position at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), being promoted until her retirement in the '90s as the Compensation and Benefits Manager at (NREL).
She was an avid golfer, bowler and played bridge regularly. To keep her girlish figure, she walked and lifted weights at Curves. She consistently sent cards for any special occasion to children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, their children, their children's children, her friends, and friends and relatives of her children. Elsie was thoughtful, kind, patient and accepting of everyone, a walking encyclopedia, and a keeper of the dates and memories. She was a confidante to many, and a resource for all. Elsie was always willing to help, though less willing to accept help. She was insightful, analytical and always up on current events, politics and the latest news. Her morning ritual included reading the entire newspaper, starting with the Sports page. She was a devoted Cornhuskers, Rockies and Broncos fan, always decked out in the appropriate logoed team shirt and accented jewelry. To that end, Elsie was stylish to her last days; she loved to dress in coordinated outfits down to the shoes and purse.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Dean and son, Brad Lee Hein. She is survived by her children, Melodie (m. Richard) Yates and Brian (m. Jaime) Hein; her daughter-in-law, Nancy Hein; her grandchildren, Jeremy (m. Carla) Hein; Jennifer (m. Thane) Hein-Gorek; Jordan Hein; Aaron (m. Tammy) Yates; Nathaniel Yates (fiancé Elissa) and Anthony Ryan Yates, her great grand children, Hayden, Asher and Elliott Hein and Talvin and Emerson Gorek. She was the last surviving child of Chris and Kate Miller and proudly served as the matriarch of the Miller family. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grands, great-grands, great-great-grands, and great-great-great grands!
Elsie was an equal opportunity giver; memorial contributions may be made in her name to a charity close to your heart. Or if you would prefer, to a cause dear to her: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
