Eugenio “Gene” Bermudez
January 19, 1936 – October 21, 2026
90 Years Young — A Life Well Lived, A Legacy Forever Remembered
Eugenio “Gene” Bermudez, 90 years young, began his one-way journey on October 21, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, love, and stories that will continue to be told for generations to come.
Born on January 19, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, to Anna and Candido Bermudez, Gene grew up surrounded by a large, close-knit family of six sisters and two brothers. Together, they were their own gang—thick as thieves, bound by the kind of sibling love that lasts a lifetime. Family was at the heart of Gene's world from the very beginning, and that never changed.
Gene proudly served in the National Guard before joining the United States Air Force, where fate brought him to the love of his life, Frances, who preceded him in death. Together, they built a family and shared 57 years of marriage, creating a lifetime of memories, raising their children, and establishing a family legacy that will live on through the generations.
Gene was not a man who blended into the background. He was the life of the party, the voice in the room, and a personality that could never be mistaken for anyone else's. He had a zest for life, a gift for making people laugh, and a way of turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories. Wherever Gene was, you could be sure there would be a story to tell.
Family was everything to him, and some of his happiest moments were spent surrounded by the people he loved. He especially treasured his poker games with his childhood friend and brother-in-law Jimmy and his buddy Mike. and Vinny. Those games were serious business, and Gene was not about to let a little traffic get in the way. He loved drinking beer and would go to the great lengths to dodge traffic so the poker game would not end. He would go to extraordinary lengths to make sure he arrived in time and, more importantly, that the game didn't end before he was ready. For Gene, poker was about more than the cards; it was about the camaraderie, the competition, the laughs, and the friendships that stood the test of time.
And then there was his beer. Gene considered himself something of a connoisseur, and he was more than happy to share his expertise with anyone willing to listen. Whether enjoying a cold one, playing cards, debating football, or holding court among family and friends, Gene knew how to enjoy the moment.
An avid sports enthusiast, Gene had a passion for racquetball that later transitioned into pickleball as the years went by. He loved the competition and the opportunity to stay active. But when it came to football, his enthusiasm knew no bounds. He loved all football and especially enjoyed betting on the games with family members. Watching the game was one thing; having a little something riding on the outcome made it even better. Those family rivalries, friendly wagers, and spirited debates will be remembered with smiles for years to come.
Gene also spent the bulk of his working life as a contractor, a profession that suited his practical nature and strong opinions perfectly. He knew a thing or two about building, and he was never shy about sharing his thoughts on how a job should be done. If he spotted something that wasn't quite right, you could count on him to point it out with the confidence of a man who knew exactly what he was talking about. In Gene's world, there was usually a right way to do things—and he was more than happy to explain why someone else had done them wrong!
Behind the humor, the opinions, the poker games, the sports bets, and the larger-than-life personality was a man who loved his family deeply. His presence was a constant, his affection was genuine, and his personality left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He brought people together, gave them reasons to laugh, and created memories that will remain long after the cards have been put away and the final whistle has blown.
Gene is survived by his beloved daughter, Lorna Bermudez, and his son, Eugene V. Bermudez (Emmy); his cherished grandsons, Calvin and Jason Bermudez; his sisters, Nellie Steinbracher and Angela Bermudez; his brothers, Candido Bermudez and Rene Bermudez; and his brother by another mother, Samuel Ramirez. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, including Cynthia, James, Troy, Melody, Michelle, Dawn, Eileen, and Eddie, along with many other extended family members and loved ones who held him in great affection.
He now joins his beloved wife, Frances, and those loved ones who made the journey before him.At 90 years young, Gene leaves behind far more than a lifetime of accomplishments. He leaves behind a family shaped by his love, friendships strengthened by decades of laughter, stories that will be retold at every gathering, and a legacy of living life on his own terms.
There will be empty seats at the poker table, one less voice debating a football game, one less critic inspecting a building project, and one less personality filling the room. But there will never be a shortage of memories, laughter, or love when his name is spoken.
So raise a cold beer to Gene. Deal one more hand of cards. Put on a football game. And if something isn't built quite right, take a moment to imagine Gene standing there, shaking his head and telling you exactly how it should have been done.He lived 90 years, loved fiercely, laughed loudly, and left his mark on all who knew him.
Gene, you will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Your journey may have taken you from us, but your spirit will always remain with us.
