Evelyn Marie Lyon

July 18, 1921 — February 15, 2017

Evelyn Marie Lyon, 95, of Denver, passed away February 15, 2017.

She is preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Victor B. Lyon, parents, Alfred and Marie Higdem; Two Sisters, Alice (the late William) Dove and Inga (the late Dewey) Olson; Brother, Elmer (the late Verda) Higdem.

Evelyn is survived by Two Daughters, Priscilla Lords and Lynda Remmel.

She was born July 18, 1921 on the family farm home in Phillips County, Montana, the daughter of Alfred and Marie Higdem. She was baptized as an infant. Evelyn lost her hearing due to an illness when she was very young.

She attended the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind. It was there that she met Victor B. Lyon, who attended the school only for his Senior year. They married on May 6, 1942 in Malta, Montana at Evelyn's parents' home. The made their home in Bozeman and Great Falls, MT and Seattle, WA. In recent years, Evelyn moved to Denver to be with her daughters. She was a loving Homemaker to her children and to her husband. She very much enjoyed visiting close family members and her friends in the Deaf community.

Even though Evelyn was deaf, she would not let that hinder her. She was warm and friendly to those she was with. She had many interests including reading and handicrafts such as crocheting, sewing clothes for her children, embroidery and quilting. As part of a team, she made over 60 quilts for the Lutheran World Relief. She also enjoyed cooking and was a great hostess when people would visit, and canning fruits for the family. Evelyn would help her husband with his interests of remodeling their homes. She took pride in raising two daughters. Once her own children were grown, Evelyn would care for other's children, some from infancy. Even today, those children would consider her an aunt or grandmother and would call her such, even up until her passing.

Evelyn was a Christian and trusted in the Lord Jesus and both she and Victor encouraged their children to learn about Jesus. They were very active in the Lutheran Church. Particularly, in the Lutheran Church for the Deaf, they were active in attending worship, classes, service and social fellowship. Part of the time they were able to attend hearing services with sign language interpreters. She was an active member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League for a number years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rocky Mountain School Deaf School, 10300 W. Nassau Ave, Denver, CO 80235.
