Gene Knight Bankston Jr., a beloved figure known for his ornery but loving spirit, passed away on July 14, 2025, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, at the age of 84. Born on October 10, 1940, in Lowell, Arizona, Gene lived a life filled with adventure and joy, leaving behind a legacy rich in cherished memories.

An avid outdoorsman, Gene's love for nature was evident in his passion for hunting and fishing. A true connoisseur of the great outdoors, he spent countless hours embracing the tranquility that only nature can provide. His travels in his RV, which began in 2003, allowed him to explore the vastness of this beautiful world, instilling in him a sense of freedom and adventure that he shared with those closest to him.

Gene’s personality was as colorful as the vibrant sunsets he cherished. He was known as a personable man, often described by those who loved him as a "grumpy bear" who had an undeniable knack for humor. Gene was unapologetically his own man, offering a mix of gruffness and warmth that drew others to him. His family remembers his great sense of humor, which would often lighten the mood even during challenging times.

His proudest accomplishments included a remarkable 64-year marriage to his devoted wife, Carmen, and the unwavering love he poured into raising his children—Daughter Tracey (Shane) Gibson and Son Darren (Colleen) Bankston. Gene was a proud grandfather to Kyle (Brittany) Gibson, Paige (Jeff) Zielke, Knight Bankston, and Miles Bankston. His legacy continues to flourish in the hearts of his great-grandchildren, Easton, Rylea, and Blake, whom he adored with every fiber of his being.

In addition Gene is also survived by his brother Sam (Kay) Bankston and sister Gladys Baker.

As a passionate Broncos fan, Gene’s enthusiasm for sports was infectious, whether it was cheering for his favorite team or sharing tales of his cherished racehorses and racecars. He made every moment memorable, and his infectious spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Gene Sr. and Dorothy Bankston, and his sister, Gloria Leamons. Though he has left this world, his presence will linger in the memories and stories of those he cherished most. Surrounded by friends and family at the time of his passing, Gene Knight Bankston Jr. will forever remain a warm light in the hearts of his loved ones, treasured for his unique spirit and the joy he brought to their lives.
