Genevieve Helming, 88, of Strasburg, CO joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven on June 22, 2013. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Strasburg Community Church, 56155 Sunset Ave, Strasburg, CO.
She was born October 16, 1924 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to Charlie and Alma Bates. She moved with her parents to the Byers area in 1930 and to Strasburg in 1939. Genevieve graduated from Strasburg High School in 1943 and married Allan Helming shortly thereafter. With the exception of the time Allan was in the military and a short time in the early 1950's, she lived in Strasburg for the remainder of her life.
After 10 years of being a stay at home mom, in 1953 she began working at Montgomery Ward. She also worked at the Strasburg Drug Store for several years and finally as a clerk for the US Postal Service where she worked for 23 years, retiring in 1986 to give full time care to her husband who was suffering from a debilitating illness. She was a devoted and tireless caregiver and because of her loving attention Allan survived many more years than predicted.
Genevieve was an active member of the Strasburg Presbyterian Church and later the Strasburg Community Church where she and Allan taught Sunday school and assisted in various activities in the Church.
She was always up for a board game or card game of any kind, and she loved to sing. She taught her children many songs they still sing today. Though she never left home, Genevieve fulfilled a missionary role right here in Strasburg and is remembered by many residents as the first contact and invitation to church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and all other children she came in contact with, playing the piano, going to Corona's to eat, outings to King Soopers, and sitting in her chair watching the birds and squirrels outside her window while awaiting visitors.
Genevieve is survived by her brother, Jess (Carolee) Bates, one son and three daughters and their spouses, Terry and Henrietta Helming, Judy and Dennis Hauptman, Vicki and Mark Allen, Sandy and Kevin Yost, 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan, her parents, Charlie and Alma Bates, her brother, Chuck Bates, and infant twins, a brother and sister.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a church of your choice.
