Gerald (Jerry) Allen Peters, 76, of Denver, died on Tuesday August 30, 2011. Jerry was a 16 year kidney transplant survivor who, after successful heart surgery, encountered numerous medical complications including intestinal cancer, which led to a quick passage.
Born on April 3, 1935 in Mason City, Iowa to the late Merle V. Peters and Teresa Campbell, Jerry was also preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Margaret (Peg) J. Peters. Jerry is survived by his brothers Tom, of Waterloo, Iowa, and Jack, of Hartland, Michigan. He is also survived by his daughters Amy Peters, Sara Sawyer, Polly Wagner, Jenny (PJ) Peters, and Mia Murray; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren all residing in the Denver metro area.
After attending Notre Dame University for one year, the Rocky Mountains called him to finish his college degree in business and economics at Regis College in Denver. It was at Regis that Jerry established lifelong friendships with a group affectionately known as "the usual suspects." Jerry was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1957 where he served as a chaplain's assistant. In December of 1958 he married Peg and started a rewarding 45 year career as an insurance actuary. As a season ticket holder, Jerry rarely missed Broncos, Rockies, or Nuggets home games. In addition to his love of sports, Jerry was passionate about books, Budweiser, modern art, jazz, and travel (especially when combined!). Jerry was a social fellow, quick with a joke or a long story, who made and kept friends easily. In addition to "the usual suspects," some of his treasured friends included "the shadow wild gang," beloved musicians, the downtown crew, catholic clergy and nuns, as well as art and theater pals.
