Gordon Williams Kinney, 89, of Aurora, passed away June 4, 2016.
He was born April 22, 1927 in Winnebago, Minnesota, the son of Burt and Blanche (Williams) Kinney. After graduating from Fairmont High School, he immediately joined the Navy March 22, 1945 and was discharged August 23, 1946. He enrolled at Macalester College September 16,1946. In 1947 he transferred to the University of Minnesota and received his BS in 1950. Weary of Minnesota winters, Gordon moved to Denver, Colorado after college graduation. He started a successful career, married his soul mate Joanne Nugent (Madison, South Dakota). and raised a family.
Gordon became a talented building contractor and built many homes in the Denver Metro area. He loved sports having played basketball, football and track in high school, where he was known as "Rook". In February 1953, his basketball coach sent him a letter of introduction and a photograph of Joanne. This began their courtship, and they were married that same year - on the 4th of October. He was an avid Bronco fan and if they lost his kids would call him the "Bronco Bear". He loved to swim and was still swimming three to four times a week. His love of swimming began in Fairmont, a town of five lakes. Reading was a joy for him all his life. When macular degeneration took his sight away, he became a member of Colorado Talking books so he could still "read" . He was always willing and able to share what he was reading. Also, at the age of 88, he took an eight week course called "Matter of Balance" and proudly displayed his certificate in their foyer. In his later years, he truly enjoyed renewing his ties with the Methodist Church; listening to his wife sing in the choir, visiting friends, and shaking hands with Pastor Peter.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Joanne Kinney; daughter, Jan Ellen Kinney; son, Ross (Susan) Kinney; two grandchildren, Laura (Chris) Albrecht and Adam Kinney; and brother, Elwyn (June) Kinney and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Burt Curtis and Blanche Ellen Kinney.
Memorial contributions may be made to Burns Memorial Methodist Church, 1095 Newark Street, Aurora, CO 80010.
