Halbert W. Varney

July 20, 1935 — June 23, 2017

Hal passed peacefully on June 23, 2017. Born in 1935 to Hal W. Varney, Sr. and the Euda (Teed) Varney, the first of two boys.

The majority of Hal's youth was spent in Salina Kansas, where he excelled in music, becoming proficient in Trumpet and French Horn. His interests in music lead him to pursue a degree in Music at the University of Nebraska. In Lincoln he met his future wife, Jeanne Lindstrom, another musical talent, and they married in 1956. They welcomed their first daughter Linda in 1958, quickly followed by Cynthia (Cindy) in 1959. Hal's career focus changed to electronics, and following opportunity the family moved to Denver, and took up residence in Arvada. In 1968 Hal began employment for KMGH, Channel 7, working at various control room positions until he retired in 2000 . In 1970 they welcomed their third daughter Virginia (Ginger).

Using his electronics knowledge he became an avid Ham radio operator, connecting to other enthusiasts around the world, a "hobby" that often complemented and assisted his work with KMGH. Hal continued his interest in music but also found great delight in aviation and photography. An avid air show enthusiast, and occasional flier, Hal found an early interest in flight by watching squads of B-29's wing away from the factories on their way to the Pacific Theater. His photography documented many family events and eventually international travels. (Canada, Mexico, The United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Monaco, New Zealand, and Australia.)

A devoted husband and family man, Hal was always supportive of his children and grandchildren, often mentoring later generations. A generous man, his home was a welcoming and safe refuge for family and friends in times of need.

Hal is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Jeanne, his daughters Linda Hansford of Ft Lupton CO., Cindy Staley of Seattle, WA, and Ginger Varney of Arvada CO,: grandchildren Shannon, Miranda, Neil, Lars, Kyle and Lacy, and great grandchildren Austin, Logan, Nevaeh, and Zoriah. His brother and close friend Earl Varney, of Arvada Co also survives him.
