Helen is remembered as a dedicated and faithful wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma. Her priorities in life centered around her family. Helen had seven siblings total (4 brothers and 3 sisters). As a youngster, she helped her mom by caring for the younger children. As an adult married woman, she raised and cared for 5 children, working nights as a waitress to supplement the family income. Later in life she helped raise and care for numerous grandchildren as well.
Helen enjoyed reading, cleaning, and baking some good ole' southern desserts that her family loved so much, such as blackberry cobbler! She was a simple woman who's only requirement for happiness was to know her children and grandchildren were taken care of. She was a strong woman... tough, sassy, witty, and possessed a sense of humor that could lighten almost any situation.
Helen enjoyed gospel music and singing. As a youngster, she sang with her sisters Ruth and Dorothy at their church. In the evening of life, she was still singing, never forgetting a lyric to any of the old favorite gospel songs.
In a conversation with one of her daughters in law during a hospital stay in 2011, she quoted the lyrics to a song on her heart and they go like this:
It won't be long, it may be soon
Some day we'll cross that mystic stream
It won't be long, it may be soon
Some day we'll lay our burdens down
It won't be long, it may be soon
Some day we'll leave this veil of tears
Forget the struggles of long years
It won't be long, it may be soon
Thank you for the legacy you've left to your family, you will be missed... we love you... we'll see you again one day soon!
