Listen to Obituary

The family of Herman Lee Darden regrets to let you know that he left to Rest in Paradise on November 1, 2025.

Herman Lee Darden or “Mr. D.” to those who knew him, was born to Junius Darden, Sr. and Lenoria Darden Woaten in Lenoria County, North Carolina, on September 12, 1937. He was born the eldest of four children: Evelyn Joyce Spence, Junius Darden, Jr., and Edmond Earl Darden.

Herman attended school in North Carolina. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy. In 1970, he married Ethel Summerville, and they were married for 55 years. They have four children: Katherine Smith (Jim); Teresa Woods (Tony); Matthew Alexander Darden; and Michelle McCoy. They also have four granddaughters and one grandson. In addition, they have eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to having a wonderful family, Herman worked for the U. S. Postal Service for 18 years after retiring as a Master Chief from the U. S. Navy after 30 years. He was also a member of the TopHatters, the American Legion, FRA, E-9’rs Club, TREA, and the Mile-High Veterans.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling. And he loved to have a good time with family and friends. All who knew him, loved him and appreciated how Herman could easily bring a hearty laugh to all of them when they were with him.

All who knew him will miss him dearly and pray he rests well for eternity in Paradise.
