Herman M. Duncan (Retired Air Force)
Herman M. Duncan, age 78 of Aurora, Colorado passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. Herman was born in Anderson, South Carolina, on August 10, 1934. Graduated from Pelzer High School and soon realized he wanted to serve his country and convinced his mother to sign for him so he could join the Air Force at the age of 17.
A few years later he found himself stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Lou.
The Air Force provided opportunity and travel and he was stationed in Maryland, the Philippines, Texas, and then in Colorado at Lowry Air Force Base. Before settling on his new base his unit was deployed to Vietnam. Herman was stationed there for a year and then returned home to his family in Colorado where he would spend the remainder of his military career. During his 20 years of service he received the following commendations for his service.
• Air Force Commendation Medal
• Air Force Good Conduct Medal
• Vietnam Service Medal
• Air Force Longevity Service Award
• Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal
From there he went on to work with Stearns Catalytic and Raytheon as an Operations Manager and eventually retired in 2007. He also put himself through college where he earned his degree in Business Administration from Columbia College.
Even after retirement he still had a passion for serving his country. He was part of the USO where he greeted returning soldiers at Denver International Airport from Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other deployment areas. He was also very active with his American Legion Post 23 and the "Boys State" Program. This program would bring together local area High School Juniors who competed by creating their own state and local governments, State Legislature and Political Party Platforms.
His other passions included camping with his family and the Good Sams, fishing and computers. But his most special moments were spent with his grandchildren.
Herman is survived by his 3 children (Herman Jr., Carol and Elizabeth) and 4 grandchildren (Ashley, Keith, Herman III, and Patrick). He will be greatly missed by all, especially his grandchildren who will always remember the "Grandpa Hugs" they were welcomed with every time he saw them.
