James French Lander (80) passed away August 6 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Jim was born August 24, 1931 to Gertrude C. and Richard F. Lander in Bristol, VA and grew up in Clearfield, PA.
As a young teen, Jim contracted Rheumatic Fever and was restricted to several months of bedrest. To relieve boredom, he read each volume of the World Book Encyclopedia. After becoming an Eagle Scout then graduating high school in 1950, he enlisted in the Army and served three years with the Army Security Agency as a cryptogropher during the Korean War.
After serving his country, Jim attended Penn State University where he earned a BS Geophysics degree in 1957. He started his professional career as a seismologist for the Coast and Geodetic Survey and became the first director of the National Earthquake Information Center. He earned masters degrees in Geophysics and in Public Administration from American University in Washington, D.C. He served one year with the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Executive Office of the President, as part of the Department of Commerce's Science Fellowship Program.
In 1972, Jim relocated to Boulder, CO and became Deputy Director of the National Geophysical Data Center in 1973 and Director of the World Data Center for Solid Earth Geophysics for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
He retired from federal service in 1987 and engaged in research through the University of Colorado and was sponsored by the National Science Foundation in Tsunamis where he studied and wrote histories of world-wide tsunami occurrences. In this capacity he served on numerous national and international scientific organizations including as International Secretary of the Tsunami Commission of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics.
In 2003, Jim left Boulder and moved to Village at Lowry in Denver. It was here where his previously unknown aptitude for painting was discovered. Jim's work was featured in a local gallery as well as the Denver International Airport. Many pieces of his work sold at Memories in the Making charity auctions and raised thousands of dollars for the Alzheimer's Association.
Jim was preceeded in death by his parents and brother Richard. He leaves behind his wife Corinne, children Jamie, James and Gail, eight grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Jim's life will take place at Village at Lowry on Saturday, August 11, 2012, 3:30 to 4:30 PM.
