James Mather passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 19, 2026, in Lakewood, Colorado, after fighting pancreatic cancer for more than two years. He was 77.

Born on November 12, 1948, in Moundsville, West Virginia, James moved through life in a way that was entirely his own. He was a dandy in the truest sense—strong-willed, hard-headed, fun, caring, and always helpful. He carried himself with unmistakable character, and those who knew him will remember a man who brought both grit and warmth wherever he went.

James served in the Army and was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life that stood as part of his enduring strength. In his working years, he was a taxicab driver, a role that suited a man who knew people, stories, and the roads that connected them. He was also an avid classic car guy, someone whose appreciation for automobiles was more than passing interest—it was part of how he saw the world.

He enjoyed the things that brought energy and camaraderie to life. James was a Denver Broncos fan to the end, and he also loved hockey and baseball. Whether following a game, talking cars, or sharing time with others, he found joy in the everyday moments that become lasting memories.

Of all that mattered to him, his daughter Megan was his proudest accomplishment. That love stood at the center of his life and remains one of the clearest reflections of who he was.

James is survived by his daughter, Megan Mather; his brothers, Keith Goudy and Ben Mather; and his sister, Patty Mather-Rutter. He is also remembered by the many friends who visited the Flathead Saloon and shared in the fellowship, stories, and laughter that were so much a part of his days. And let's not forget his partner in crime, Peter Daniluk. He leaves behind a circle of family and friends who knew his stubborn streak, cherished his humor, and relied on his caring and helpful nature and was truly a man that lived in the now.

James Mather will be remembered for his toughness, his heart, his dandiness, his love of sports and cars, and the unmistakable spirit he brought to the people around him. His memory will live on in the stories told by those who loved him and in the lasting impression of a life lived with personality, conviction, and care.
