Jeannette L. Nelson

December 14, 1951 — April 25, 2013

Jeannette "Jeanie" Louise Nelson 1951-2013
61 of Aurora, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013. She was born on Dec 14, 1951 in Aurora, Colorado to Laverne L. Nelson and Mary Evelyn Nelson, who preceded her in death, and she was also preceded by her sister, Marilynn Nelson.

She is survived by her sister, Patricia Garvais of Aurora, her friend, Richard Eisenberth of Brighton, her friend Karen Hines of Stapleton, and numerous other extended family and friends.

Sorrow has once again struck at the heart of our CGRA family with the passing yesterday evening of Jeanie Nelson after a long battle with cancer.

Jeanie was one of the 94 Founding Members of CGRA, serving as our third President from 1988-1990, and again in 1999. She was the first woman to serve in the position of president in any IGRA Member Association.

Jeanie's list of firsts did not stop there. She was also CGRA's first Ms. CGRA in 1985-86, going on to claim the first Ms. IGRA title in 1987.

Jeanie and her horse Torchee could sometimes be found at gymkhanas, but as a competitor she was better known for events such as Goat Dressing and Steer Deco. When not competing she often volunteered as an Official.

Outside of Gay Rodeo, Jeanie was a Colorado girl born and raised, attending high school and college in the Loveland and Fort Collins area. In professional life she w as an accountant, skills she shared with CGRA on our Audit Committee.

In recognition of her service to CGRA and Gay Rodeo, the members elected her a Lifetime Member, and further honored her as Grand Marshal of Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo 9.

Along with many other Past Presidents, Jeanie joined us for celebrations marking 30 years of Gay Rodeo at RMRR 30 in the summer of 2012.

At the time of her passing, Jeanie was surrounded and comforted by members of her CGRA family, with many more lifting her up in thought and prayer. As funeral arrangements are settled they will be posted here.

We invite you to share your own stories and memories of Jeanie so our CGRA family may better know this great pioneer of our organization.

Private services to be held.
