Listen to Obituary

With profound sadness, we share the passing of Joan McGowan, whose generous spirit and kind heart touched everyone she knew. She died peacefully on September 5, 2026 at the age of 88. Born in 1937 in Sault Ste Marie Ontario to her parents Andrew and Alice, she grew up on the shores of Lake Superior. She enjoyed her career with the airlines, then went on to own her own ceramics business. In her retirement years, she travelled the country in a RV, eventually settling down in Colorado where she volunteered her love and talent with the Rocky Mountain Submarine Veterans which brought her immense honor and joy. She also loved making quilts for those she loved, and would annually donate baby quilts with teddy bears to local hospitals and fire stations. Helping people and giving back to others is what she was very passionate about. Joan is survived by her children Joanne (Kevin), Susan, Sheree, David (Karen), Robin, her sister, Nancy and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph and beloved daughter Shawn.

A celebration of life will be held on October 22, 2026 at 10am at West Metro Chapel in Lakewood, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United States Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation at USSVCF.org
