John Cary Young

John Cary Young, 69, passed away after a very brief illness at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver on April 17, 2015. His nephew and wife, John M. and Tania Young were by his side. John was born at the Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor, Maine on March 1, 1946, the son of the late H. John Young, M.D. and the late Barbara Kirby Young, He grew up on the coast in Jonesport where he took full advantage of a "free range" childhood. He moved to Bethel, Maine with his family in 1959 where he graduated from Gould Academy in 1964. During high school, he was a member of the football, softball and ski teams and was president of his class. John, his friends and family were avid skiers, and spent many hours together on and off the slopes of Sunday River. He spent summers as a camper and later as a counselor at Hyde Bay Camp in Cooperstown, NY where his father had also been a counselor. He also worked building the pipeline in Wisconsin. After attending Boston University, and in the process of recovering from a near fatal car accident that defined the rest of his life, John became a painting contractor specializing in painting large buildings throughout the West. He was especially fond of the years he spent living and working in Aspen. The building he was most proud of painting was the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. In high school, he built a hot rod from scratch. He maintained this interest all his life through attending hot rod/ drag races through out the West and listening to his favorite, Car Talk. He also continued his childhood interest in model building as a member of the Rocky Mountain Shipwrights (model boat building club) of Denver. He had a brief appearance in the documentary, Gimme Shelter, filmed at the disastrous Rolling Stones Concert in Altamont, California.

He is survived by his brother, Daryl L. Young of Jonesport, and Daryl's son John Michael Young, wife Tania J. Cervantes, and their children Michael L. J. Young, Samantha and Adan Salazar; Daryl's daughter Kelsie {Hector} Ibarra, and their daughter Zoel all of Denver; his sister Carol Y. Colby, her children Deborah Colby, Kathryn Colby (Matthew) Webb all of Baltimore County, MD and Daniel Colby of Jonesport; cousin, Janet K Crowley, (Bruce) and daughter Maegan, Lynne F. Kirby and son Jacob all of Jonesport. Beside his parents he was predeceased by his cousin Micheal Kirby and aunt and uncle, Emma Ann and Lewis F. Kirby. He was also predeceased by several guys on his painting crew with whom he had spent many years and missed greatly.

We sincerely thank all of his friends who were with him on his life's journey especially, James (Bratsie) Keller, friend Martha, the supportive associates in his apartment complex and his nephew, John Michael, wife Tania and children who became his family In Denver. A memorial service will be held in Denver at 1425 Xenia St. Denver, Colorado (clubhouse) on April 29th, 2015 at 2 O'clock and burial will take place in Jonesport at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
