John E. Grout
78, of Lakewood. Passed away July 21, 2016. Father of Michael (Lynn) Grout, Suzanne Grout and Tawnya Grout. Brother of Wendell (Leila) and Claude (Esther) Grout. Grandfather of Callista and Tara Grout. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Raised on the prairies of Mankato, Kansas and the Kitchen of Velda, John's love of food was unsurpassed. Tough lessons taught by father Byron, John remained a little spoiled being the youngest of three brothers. Wendell and Claude loved their brother with fight, spirit and charm. John became commonly known as "Rusty" he was a "swell guy". He served as a Private in the Army in 1956 and was stationed in Germany. He worked for the Sheriffs Department in 1960. Married Claudette Sayers in 1963. Son Michael was born in 1964 and daughter Suzanne in 1968.
He formed the "Lawmen" and played at Taylor's Supper Club and toured the country. His father Byron passed in 1969 and his daughter Tawnya was born in 1978. John went back to work with the Sheriffs department and in 1983 his mother Velda passed. Then he became a security guard for King Soopers. In 1987 he went to California, lived with his brother Claude and sister-in-law Esther. He started AA meetings. John often said "I'm here today by the grace of God and AA". A year later he moved back home to Denver to be closer to his children and work the program. John became closer to his higher power which was the Lord God. John later started his own security company. He worked primarily at a Bingo hall where he made many friends.
John was a wonderful, humble man with an incredible wit and humor. He valued his family and friends, not money. His love for his children was always without condition. His grandchildren are a reflection of his love. He enjoyed all sports and his Broncos. He was an artist in many ways including music, drawing and painting. Some of John's children's best grades were due to the help of his artistry adorning their book reports. Living his last days independently and driving his car with pride, and with the eyes of many others. John loved a cigar and a good story.
His final weeks were spent with his family holding hands, lots of kisses and butterscotch malts, listening to Frank Sinatra, writing in journals, reading stories and painting. His humor fueled our family to stay strong and kept a smile on our faces. When circumstances are overwhelming and seem too much to bear, depend on the Lord for strength and trust his tender care.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto (upon) thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.
